6 reasons i don't teach yoga

If there's one question I receive on the regular, it's:

"Do you teach yoga?"

Or some variant thereof. (i.e., Where do you teach? Are you teaching yet? Why aren't you teaching?)

My answer has become pull-string. "Well, I've completed 200 hours of teacher training and have been practicing since age 15, but I never had any intention of teaching. I did YTT for me, for the journey."

That's the short answer. This is the long, FUN, REAL one:

Modern yoga. Your average studio, USA. Hotbed of personalities, overflowing psychological baggage, and good old fashioned red-bloodedness. MICROCOSM!

Somewhere out there, a rousing howl pierces the spiritual silence. A yogi pounds his chest. A yogini tosses her mane.

1. All Dressed Up — Ass check in the mirror. Makeup spackled. Dudes be upping their game. Hair mussed just so. Smelling like the Bloomie's homme counter. When was the last time we wore our holey (as in full o' holes, not godly/holy) tees and threadbare sweats?
2. Wanting Physical Contact — Touch. Me. Three words for you: feel-good adjustment. Being touched makes us feel seen.
3. Don't Do Anything Uncouth — We try our best not to embarrass ourselves. We have an impression to make! No burping, gas passing, falling, tripping, awkward outbursts, or anything else that might kill the illusion. Nothing ruins the mood like bad manners.
4. Listen More, Talk Less — When a mouth is open and yammering, the brain cannot learn and the spirit can't find the simple space to connect.
5. Pay — We'll have none of this 'go dutch' b.s. Open your wallet, be generous.
6. Everybody is (Secretly) Looking Forward to Savasana — It is on the menu. Wink, wink.

At the age of 14, I was slightly boy-entranced. My Grammie used to joke that I'd get whiplash if I wasn't more careful. Particularly luminous lads would often catch my eye (and crane my neck) as we were driving around. My head seemed to act of its own accord. Apparently it has hormones, too.

Nowadays, we the people don't even look at each other. Our eyes are only for our gadgets. Rubbernecking is a thing of the past. Today's great affliction. . . is TEXT NECK. But fear not, hangdog head-schlumpers, yoga is your cure-all.

Pedestalization is dangerous. I speak figuratively, however let it be acknowledged that literal pedestaling comes with hazards of its own. Were Michelangelo's David's wang to fall upon your innocent head, you wouldn't soon forget the experience.

These days, it would seem that d*cks are tumbling down, down, down from their podiums everywhere we turn. Yogic, religious, political, corporate, scholarly. Ouch! But it only hurts if you raised them above yourself in the first place...or sought the shade of solace from something other than your Self.

I feel compelled to help. We're ALL on the same playing field (we should be playing for the same team). And I can prove it. Read this, think of this, when you need a reminder.
